Bad urban design, like its consequences, is obvious. Good design, however, often goes unnoticed and is frequently discounted as a critical element of effective revitalization. Examine urban design as a tool for revitalization, community building, and ensuring a safe public environment. Explore how urban design reflects social and economic imperatives and cultural values. Review urban design models to understand their positive and negative impacts on the form of cities and neighborhoods, and apply this knowledge in a case study to identify the consequences of bad design and develop design-based strategies for revitalization.
